Pregnancy is a wonderful time in a woman’s life. It is a time when a woman should feel loved and supported in her choices. The choices a woman faces when pregnant can seem endless. This is one of several reasons many families choose to work with a doula. One role a doula fills is that of resource for information. As a doula, I talk with families about my experiences supporting mothers and their partners in childbirth. We also explore the questions and concerns the family has in regards to their upcoming birth experience. I also encourage them to use my lending library. I believe that each woman can have a fulfilling and empowered birth experience if she is educated about the choices she may have during the course of childbirth and if she chooses care providers who are supportive of her desire to have an active, empowered experience. My primary role, as a doula, is to provide continuous support to the laboring family. I attend to the couple through their entire labor experience wherever the family chooses to labor: home, birth center or hospital. After delivery, many families find themselves retelling the story of their labor to family and friends. When I come to a family’s home for their postpartum visit, I bring a written account of the birth experience. Talking through the experience can help each partner understand not only their own feelings, but also those of their partner. I
wish you the best of luck on your journey through pregnancy and parenthood!
