About Julie

My doula education began in college when I took a class titled “Choices in Childbirth.” I went into the course having no idea what we would be covering. All moms labor and deliver in a hospital with medications and physicians. Right? Not necessarily. What I took away from this class was that women had many choices of where and with whom they could labor and deliver. This class opened my eyes to all of the choices women have throughout the course of their childbirth experience.

Several years later, I settled in Lawrence and was teaching in a child development center. I was surrounded by pregnant moms who were discussing some of the choices I had learned about in class. As we were talking, I saw first hand how empowered these women felt knowing they had choices. I realized this was a passion I had to follow. I had to support women in their empowered pregnancies and deliveries.

I quickly learned at the International Childbirth Education Association International Conference that women were not only doing childbirth work to follow their passion, but they were doing it full-time. That is when I decided to change my career path. I stopped teaching and began working as a childbirth professional.
